Welcome to HuntMontana's Landowner Information Page. If the following information doesn't answer all of your questions, please do not hesitate to call us or drop us an email. We have someone out in the field regularly and would be more than happy to come meet with you to discuss your individual needs or concerns.

At HuntMontana, we know how difficult it can be to manage hunting rights these days, especially with demand growing at an exponential rate. We've crafted an organization designed to alleviate most of the major headaches associated with dealing with the hunting public. Our hunters are screened for criminal and wildlife violation history, we carry extensive liability insurance (all of our landowners are named as additional insureds) and we strictly prohibit any off road motorized travel on any of the properties we contract with.

Who will be hunting on my land?

All of the land we contract is open to hunting to anyone that can pass our background check and pay our access fee. Our hunters join this club because they know that when they go to a farm they've reserved for a day or a weekend, they will be the only ones hunting there. They joined because they like to walk in and hunt under completely fair chase conditions. These are some of the most ethical hunters you'll have the pleasure of meeting.

How will I know if the person hunting on my land is from the HuntMontana organization?

We give each member an ID card and a placard to hang from their rear view mirror. Since they will be parked in a space that you designate, you will know at a glance that they are supposed to be there. If you spot someone driving across your land, you can be assured that it is not one of our members and hopefully you'll call the proper authorities. You can also call us and we'll be more than happy to investigate.

Is HuntMontana part of the Montana State Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks Block Management program? It sounds a lot like it.

No. We are not associated with Fish, Wildlife and Parks. Though we may seem similar, there are vast differences between the two organizations. Unlike Block Management, we tightly restrict hunting pressure on our properties. We want to keep hunting quality high. We will however, at your request, send hunters to thin deer populations by harvesting does or assist you in implementing other game management practices.

Unlike the Block Management Program, under our organization you will always know who is on your property and, since we screen our hunters carefully, you can rest assured that your property will not be abused. We will call you, if you desire, and let you know in advance each time we want to send a hunter to your property. You, as the landowner, regain complete control of your property while supporting our deep hunting heritage.

What about liability? Isn't there exposure for me if I let someone hunt on my land?

We carry two million dollars of liability insurance to protect you against accidents that could occur. We will issue a certificate of insurance to you naming you as an additional insured. In this way, you are protected from property damage or other accidents. Also, all of our hunters are required to sign a detailed release of liability and hold harmless agreement.

What about big game retrieval?

Since this is a walk-in only hunting organization, we do occasionally require assistance with game retrieval. Normally we hire the landowner for this for a fee, some landowners let us retrieve the game ourselves with a pickup or ATV. Again, how we operate on your property is for you to decide.

How are the lease agreements structured?

We prefer to contract for land under 5-10 year terms. Normally, we lease our properties for the first year on a yearly basis and, if both parties are satisfied with the results, we try to negotiate a longer term. Longer term leases give both sides stability and flexibility to improve habitat and wildlife populations. We know that our investments will pay off and you know that we'll be around to honor our commitments.

My kids like to hunt. Won't leasing to your organization cut us out of the picture?

Almost all landowners have family members who like to hunt. We certainly understand that. Normally, most landowners reserve certain dates, some favorite areas or even certain game species for their family hunting. We're OK with that. You will still retain as much flexibility as you require.

How are the lease payments determined?

The price we are willing to pay depends on the quality of the habitat and hunting opportunities. Lots of factors affect the final price such as percentage of land under cultivation, number of livestock grazed, other amenities such as fishing, small game hunting etc.

Why are you guys doing this?

Again, we appreciate the opportunity to work with all of our landowners and we highly value the relationships we are building through this organization. We believe we will be a vital piece of the hunting picture in Montana far into the future through building those relationships. You, as a landowner, are a key component to carrying on our hunting heritage.
